Croatia and Czech Republic Invite Citizens to Help Shape 2026 ROADPOL Speed Marathon

15 April 2026 marks this year’s coordinated 24‑hour Speed Marathon, a flagship action within ROADPOL’s annual enforcement calendar.

More than 20 member countries are expected to participate, continuing a shared commitment to reduce road deaths attributed to excessive speed.

Community

As part of the campaign, several countries are once again inviting citizens to actively participate in preparing the operation by proposing locations where speeding is a recurring issue. This year, both Croatia and the Czech Republic have launched public calls encouraging residents to identify dangerous stretches of road needing intensified monitoring.

Public

The Croatian Ministry of the Interior has announced that the upcoming 24‑hour speed‑control operation will run from 00:00 to 24:00 on 15 April 2026, covering the entire territory of the Republic of Croatia. Authorities emphasize that excessive speed remains the leading cause of the most severe road crashes, making this joint preventive‑repressive action essential for reducing fatalities and improving driver awareness. Croatian citizens are invited to contribute by submitting their recommendations for locations where drivers frequently violate speed limits. Submissions may be made for any police jurisdiction across the country. After the collection period closes, police officers will review all suggestions and select those road segments that meet required operational and safety conditions for intensive monitoring on April 15. Authorities stress that public involvement is a crucial element of the campaign, helping ensure that resources are deployed where they can have the greatest effect.

Participation

The Czech Police have likewise opened a public participation process for the Speed Marathon 2026, an annual traffic‑safety initiative focused on enforcing posted speed limits. The Police rely on a combination of traffic‑safety analyses, internal risk assessments, and citizen proposals to identify road segments where full‑day measurements will take place on 15 April 2026. Members of the public may submit their suggestions through the online platform Bezpečné Cesty (Safe Roads). The voting and submission period runs from 23 February to 23 March 2026, after which authorities will finalize the list of monitored locations. The Czech Police have highlighted that, over the years, citizens have suggested both serious and humorous locations. While whimsical ideas cannot be included, police encourage continued engagement, noting that many practical proposals from the public have directly influenced previous enforcement maps.

For both Croatia and the Czech Republic, the ROADPOL Speed Marathon represents a coordinated European effort to:

  • Reduce fatalities linked to speeding

  • Increase driver awareness of speed‑related risks

  • Encourage public cooperation in road‑safety planning

  • Strengthen cross‑border consistency in enforcement

This shared initiative underscores ROADPOL’s dedication to improving road safety and highlights the value of involving citizens directly in identifying hazardous areas.
