Czech Police Mastering the Spike Strips

Another twenty police recruits have successfully completed a special training course on the use of the spike strip, the Czech Police announced.

This year alone, the device has already helped officers in South Moravia bring five dangerous pursuits to a safe conclusion. And its use is set to expand further: in September, 34 more new officers completed spike strip training at the Vyškov airfield, bringing the total number of trained officers this year to 170.

Tool

The spike strip is an important tool for police when it comes to ending risky chases quickly and safely. Made of foldable metal sections with spikes, it is deployed across the road, usually from behind a patrol car, just before the fleeing vehicle approaches. The spikes puncture the tires, remain lodged inside, and gradually release the air. This prevents sudden skidding or loss of control and ensures the vehicle slows down safely. Officers use the device when a driver refuses to stop, drives at excessive speed, and endangers other road users.

Pursuit

One of the latest successful uses occurred in June in the Znojmo district. A woman with a valid driving ban tried to evade police patrols. Officers from Pohořelice deployed a spike strip near Branišovice. As she drove over it, her tires were punctured. She managed only a few hundred meters before being forced to stop. A subsequent check revealed she had tested positive for drugs.
