Belgium Scoring High Against Substance Driving

Less than 1% of drivers were found under the influence of alcohol and drugs during a weekend action of road checks by the Belgian Federal Police.

From Friday, January 17, at 6:00 PM to Monday, January 20, at 6:00 AM, the Belgian Federal Road Police, in collaboration with over 100 Local Police Zones, conducted a large-scale operation targeting alcohol and drug use among drivers. The operation, part of the ongoing commitment to road safety, yielded promising results.

Results

  • A total of 61,576 drivers were checked across Belgium.
  • Only 0.87% of drivers tested positive for alcohol, a marked improvement compared to previous campaigns in June 2024 (2.01%) and January 2024 (1.35%).
  • 207 drivers had their licenses immediately revoked due to excessive alcohol consumption.
  • 128 drivers tested positive for drug use, with 96 licenses revoked on the spot.

Leadership

Koen Ricour, Commissioner and Director of the Federal Road Police, praised the efforts of law-abiding drivers and the officers involved:
“I thank responsible drivers and the hundreds of officers who carried out this operation successfully. The results are encouraging, but there is still room for improvement. A single impaired driver is one too many, as they endanger not only themselves but also other road users. Unfortunately, tragedies still happen too often.”

Commitment

The Integrated Police Force has reiterated its dedication to road safety through frequent and targeted operations. Similar campaigns will continue throughout the year to deter dangerous driving behaviors and ensure the safety of all road users.
