On October 8 and 9, 2024, a national crackdown on distracted driving was conducted across Belgium.
During the operation, the Federal Road Police, along with 121 Local Police zones, intensified their efforts, setting up 244 checkpoints nationwide, in addition to mobile inspections.
The operation yielded 3,847 reports and immediate fines for distracted driving, nearly double the 2,048 violations recorded during the previous campaign in May. Of these, 3,769 drivers were fined specifically for using a mobile phone while driving, compared to 1,934 in the previous campaign. In addition, 78 drivers were caught engaging in other distracting activities, such as applying makeup or reading.
A total of 942 drivers had their licenses revoked during this operation, up from 427 in the previous edition. This increase is largely due to the growing number of public prosecutors recommending immediate license revocation for drivers caught using a mobile phone at the wheel.
“Distracted driving, particularly mobile phone use, remains a leading cause of traffic accidents. This campaign highlights the continued efforts of the police to tackle this dangerous behavior and improve road safety throughout the country”, the Police say.
