PORTUGAL: Pedro Miguel Alves Barrete

Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Miguel Alves Barrete (born 1980) serves as the Head of the Traffic and Road Safety Division within the Operations Department of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR). He is also an active member of the Council and Operations Group of ROADPOL, the European Traffic Police Network.

Pedro began his military career at the Military Academy, where he completed his degree in 2004. He joined the GNR Traffic Brigade the same year, quickly advancing to roles such as trainer and Traffic Detachment Commander.

In 2009, following the dissolution of the Traffic Brigade and a restructuring of the GNR, he was assigned to the National Traffic Unit. As Captain, he served as Deputy Head of the Continuous Training Section, as well as a trainer and Detachment Commander until 2016.

From 2016 to 2020, Pedro took on various roles, including Deputy Head of Operations for the Fiscal Action Unit and serving as a trainer and advisor to the National Police of East Timor. After his promotion to Major, he moved to the Madeira Territorial Command, where he was responsible for Operations, Information, Training, and Public Relations.

In 2021, he returned to the GNR’s Traffic and Road Safety Division as Head of Operational Activity Planning. Following his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel in April 2022, he was appointed Head of the Traffic and Road Safety Division, a role he continues to hold today.

In addition to his military degree, Pedro possesses postgraduate qualifications in Occupational Safety and Hygiene, Law and Security, and Security and Defense.
